Thornvilles' Sculpture, Dewsbury

thornvllle sculpture

A celebratory landmark sculpture to mark the refurbishment of several streets, the 'Thornvilles' in the Scout Hill area of Dewsbury, West Yorks. The sculpture is sited on a triangular shaped piece of land that creates an entrance to the residential area from the main road.

The form of the sculptures is based on the site itself and reflects the 3 corners of the land and the 3 trees that are planted on the site. The shapes and colours were informed by the leaves and berries that grow on the planted area of the site.

thornville profileResearch and design workshops were carried out with year 4 and 5 students from two local primary schools, Boothroyd and St Paulinus, who undertook site visits before returning to the classroom to develop their own ideas for the site using drawing and scale models.

The sculpture was commissioned by Kirklees Councils' Dewsbury Neighbourhood Programme.

The piece is manufactured from stainless steel with powder coated details and was built by S & O Fabrications of Brighouse.
